Say it with me .... Babirusa

When visiting Animal Kingdom you have to learn to slow down and take the time to explore all the nature trails.  The Oasis is a perfect example of opportunity missed by many visitors. Take a stroll and you will see, things you have never seen before.  Just look past the large leaves, near the babbling brook and you could see a Babirusa.

Babirusa means "pig deer", even though some evidence suggest that the animal is more closely related to the hippopotamus. They are unique to several Indonesian islands. The males have tusks and very large canine teeth.  They eat fruit, vegetables, birds and small animals.  They are more active in the morning hours, being quick runners and swimmers.  Their lifespan is approximately 24 years.  Today poaching and habitat loss have cut their numbers to about 4,000.

On this particular morning we got to see both the male and the female enjoying themselves in the oasis. My husband wanted me to mention that this animal reminds him of Watto from Star Wars. Everything reminds him of Star Wars. He will watch the Babirusa for a few minutes with me then say, we should go to Star Tours tomorrow.

The Batty Stars at the Animal Kingdom

The bats of Disney's Animal Kingdom live in the Cliffs of Anandapur exhibit, part of the Maharajah Jungle Trek in the park's Asia-themed area.  The exhibit has Malayan flying foxes and  Rodrigues fruit bats.

I never miss stopping by to see them, amazing animals.

One of many details at the Tree of Life in the Animal Kingdom.  I could spend hours wondering the paths around the Tree of Life and be entertained.  It is a sculpture and it is so much fun photographing.
This is a close up of a lizard.  Try and find it next time you are there.

Finding Mickey Mouse

Can you find this Hidden Mickey? Need a hint, look in the water.

This Hidden Mickey can be found at the Animal Kingdom along the Maharajah Jungle Trek, near the tiger habitats.  Pay close attention to all the paintings on the trail you should discover several Hidden Mickeys.

The Orange Octopus

I have photographed this sign several times.  It is on one of the popcorn carts at the Animal Kingdom.  The stylized craftsmanship of this piece reminds me of sculpture. The orange is bright and eye-catching.   The tentacles are  strong, yet whimsical.  It would be great to hang in my home.  There is so much art to take in at WDW, it is like visiting an art gallery.

This week I discuss discovering DeVine at the Animmal Kingdom.

Animals of WDW

One of my favorite trails is in Asia, along the Maharajah Jungle Trek. It is here you will find the big cats, Tigers.  Their are several viewing areas along the trail.  I have always been able to get an great photo.  On this participially hot day I was able to caught one taking a dip to cool off. Their beauty is amazing, and everyone should take a few extra minutes here to enjoy them.

With the crisp air of October bringing us closer to Halloween I give you this photo.  Do you know where you can find it?  It is located in the dark deep outdoor sitting area of Pizzafari at the Animal Kingdom.  There in the jungle you never know what creepy crawlys you will see.

Favorite Photo Friday

By now you know I like the little things off the beaten path.  Located in one of the bathrooms in the Animal Kingdom are these wonder frogs.  You never know what you will see, so make sure you keep your eyes open.

The Animals of WDW

I always love to try and see the Silver Back Gorilla at the Animal Kingdom.  On this day I got lucky.  He was sitting right up against the glass in the viewing area.  Well at least his silver back was.

Every time I have walked by Pizzafaria these bright lizards catch my attention.   They are located on the side of the restaurant.  I feel like I am in an orange tunnel of folk art.  Love it!

Spectacular Signage

Located behind Restaurantosaurus in Dinoland, USA at the Animal Kingdom is a great sign that express what most of us vacationing at WDW are on a mission to get.  Most of us have had that vacation when we snap a picture of everything we see, not wanting to miss anything that will give us the best shot to remember our trip.  Instead of filling your camera with hundreds of things you really will not remember pick a theme. Your family can decide to concentrate on food, signs, entrance ways or even hidden Mickeys.  Everyone on the trip will become involved in this photo scavenger hunt and the photos will become your best ever.

Let me also take a motion to admire this sign.  It is kitschy, which fits the B-movie like feel of Dinoland.  Does this area not remind you of the giant ant or killer dinosaur (which was really a lizard) movies?  Now don't get me wrong, I love this about Dinoland.  This feeling is what makes the area Disney instead of bad carnival.  The Disney magic is in the details.  All the fine details come together to transport you  into the moment.  Don't forget to enjoy the details.  I do say that a lot don't I?

The Aminals of WDW

The Impala are found on Kilimanjaro trails in Africa.  They are a beautiful graceful antelope.  According to National geographic "Impalas are fleet runners who are able to leap distances of up to 33 feet (10 meters). They use this technique to escape predators and sometimes, apparently, simply to amuse themselves. The impala can also clear bushes and other obstacles by soaring some 10 feet (3 meters) in the air. Typically, a running impala will simply jump over anything in its path."

Here at Animal Kingdom, the are amazing to watch as they gaze on top of their hill.  Take the time to look for them.

A Quiet Escape Among the Dinosaurs

When at any Disney park you are always on the look out for a quite place to caught your breath and relax.  At the Animal Kingdom one of the best spots is among the dinosaurs, over at Dinoland, USA.

No, really!  The crowd heads to grab a fast pass, then rushes off to fit in Finding Nemo.  What you need to do is head beyond the fast pass dispenser, into the shade.  There you will find some wonderful sculptures of dinosaurs and a few benches to relax on.

Beer Taps at the Animal Kingdom

While waiting for my husband to buy a drink at one of the many concessions stands at the Animal Kingdom I saw these wood carved beer taps.

They were on the side of the stand.  I do not believe they were actual being used.  The detail of the carvings was beautiful.  Keep your eye open, the details at WDW always will surprise you.

Babies at the Animal Kingdom

During my visit to the Animal Kingdom in May I happened upon these beautiful baby ducks.

The cast member in the aviary told us they were only 4 days old.

Mom and Dad were close by keeping an eye on them.

I love this about the Animal Kingdom, you truly never know what you are going to see.

What happen to Discovery River Boats at Animal Kingdom

I remember going to Animal Kingdom and riding along the river.  I thought this was great.  A breeze, a witty driver and a break from walking.  What happened?

The ride was a non-stop trip that brought the passengers  to the docks of the Safari Village or Asia. The captain would  point out items on the river. Small animal handlers would do a show and tell along the way.

In 1999 the attraction was renamed Radio Disney River Cruise and played commentary from Radio Disney.  The routes were also modified, with boats returning to the departing dock instead of stopping at the other dock for guests to disembark.

The ride closed in late 1999 due to large numbers of disappointed guests who had not realized that the ride's original purpose was transportation.

The docks, however, can still be seen in the park. The Safari Village dock is used for character greetings while Asia's dock is now a shaded area where guests can sit down and relax.

Bamboo Groves of the Animal Kingdom

The Animal Kingdom has the most amazing landscaping.  The park is filled with lush tropic enivorment.  You can not help but notice the towering bamboo.  It there is a breeze the day you are visiting, just stop and listen to the magic sounds of the bamboo swaying.  I love it!

On my last trip, I noticed something strange.  The bamboo was a bright green.  I though, "What an unusual color."  I had to look closer.  "That is painted!"  Unfortunately, some many people have craved their name and initials into the beautiful bamboo, Disney has deiced to paint them.    I understand, in the wilds of Asia you would not see "AJ loves MK".  It did make me sad.  Why and who does this? You can't enjoy nature or are you so self obsessed that you think everyone needs to know you were there?  Please some one explain.

Next time you visit, the Animal Kingdom let yourself be immersed in the landscape.  It will enhance your enjoyment of the park.  OK, I am off my soap box for now.
