This Fish is no Fish
When visiting The Seas with Nemo and Friends at Epcot I took a few photos of a charming cuttlefish. He is located in the smaller observation tanks at the Sea Base. Unlike is name implies the cuttlefish is not a fish but a mollusk, like a clam. At first glance you might think him strange and ugly, oh but he is very cute.
They can be anywhere from 1 inch to 3 feet, except for the giant Australian cuttlefish which could get to be the size of a small man. Whatever that means, I don't want to meet that one. They have 8 sucker-lined arms and 2 prehensile tentacles. The mouth is a sharp beak that can cut like a pair of scissors. They move by shooting water from its body and steering with its fins. They have 3 hearts, one for each set of gills and one for the rest of the body. It must take a lot to pump that blue-green blood through this unusual creature. Like an octopus, the cuttlefish can release ink startle predators. I swear I am not making this up.
All of that aside, those are not the most amazing characteristics of the cuttlefish. They can instantaneously change colors to blend with surroundings. Do you not just love the cuttlefish now?
Here are a few photos where you can even see him slightly change color from one frame to the next.
