The Main Street Confectionery

As we were walking out of the Magic Kingdom this past fall the Main Street Confectionery was closing up, only a handful of visitor were in the shop. It was quiet and strange not to see the crowds pushing in the doorway.  I could not resist capturing this moment of quite.

The Dapper Dans on a Winter Morning

The Dapper Dans have been performing at the Magic Kingdom at WDW since 1971. They perform nine show a day, seven days a week. In the morning the usually arrive at the Main Street USA on the horse drawn trolley. During the afternoon you could happen upon them anywhere on Main street, even in the barbershop. Their must see show is at 5pm along with the Magic Kingdom Security Guard for the Flag Retreat Ceremony.

They really are good and fun to watch. On this day they were using the Deagan Organ Chimes. Each of the eight chimes has three octaves of a single note, comprising a C scale. Amazing!

The performances, like the Dapper Dan's is what gives Disney it's magic. It you get a chance slow down on your visit and enjoy all the little experiences, you will add unforgettable memories.

Finding Mickey Mouse - in the Shadow

It is noon at the Magic Kingdom you stop, to sit and just have a relaxing moment.  Would you notice this Hidden Mickey?

During certain times of day you can spot this Mickey on the concert border around the Partners Statue in front of Cinderella's Castle.  It is the railing that actual forms the shadow.  How cool is this?  You know that nothing is done by accident.

A Temporary Hidden Mickey Mouse

On a rainy afternoon at the Magic Kingdom, my husband and I ducked into Cosmic Ray's Starlight cafe, to grab a bite to eat. As we enjoyed a burger and a quite moment I spotted a cast member joyously cleaning the windows.  He smiled and hummed while he cleaned.  Surprisingly, with only a hand few of people in the cafe, he was creating one of my favorite kinds of Hidden Mickeys.  With his foaming window cleaner he drew Mickey after Mickey only to wipe them away.  He was delighted in making anyone chuckle, who happened to noticed what he was doing.  However, he really seemed to amuse himself the most.

Keep your eyes open, you never know what special moment you will come upon.

Favorite Photo Friday

One the busiest areas at the Magic Kingdom is the Hub where the Partners statue of Walt Disney and Mickey Mouse stand.  It is a great location to photographic Cinderella's Castle.  There are also plenty of benches to take a break.  Many visitors don't notice the other statues encircling the Partners statue.  They are some of my favorite characters.  As my husband rested on one of the  benches I strolled around to admire the other smaller statues.  I happen to snap a quick shot of Minnie Mouse and turned to move on, when I noticed that she is lovingly looking towards Walt and Mickey.  Need I say more.

I think I am going to try this one again for an even better angle.

Saturday Snack - Fried Corn on the Cob?

I spent a wonderful afternoon in Liberty Square on Thursday (6/9/11).  It was a normal 90 degree day in Florida, so my husband was ready for a drink.  The Liberty Square Market offers a great variety of healthy choices, along with the hot dogs and soda.  On line to pay for my water and Gatorade I stopped this strange sign.

What could this be?  My husband thought is might be popcorn.  On the Cob?  So, I had to order it.

It was burnt on the outside, greasy and just weird.  Now I have been to my share of fairs and have tried an array of fried objects, this should never be eaten.  The great healthy vegetable corn was turned into an unhealthy mess.  I will not be having this again .... might as well have a deep fried Twinkie.

It was so greasy I couldn't even share with this begging ibis, I was afraid it would make him sick.

Stroll over to the Plaza Rose Garden to find a romantic quite moment at the Magic Kingdom.  Nestled between the paths of Main Street U.S.A and Tomorrowland you can admire the roses, gaze at Cinderella's Castle, holds hands with your loved one.  The waterfall near Cosmic Ray's Starlight Cafe helps to drown out the noise of the crowd.  One of my top rated spots for a peaceful break.

Good Night Magic Kindom

One of my favorite memories of the Magic Kingdom is the balloon vendor. They bring to being 7 on my first trip to MK and how amazed I was by those balloons.  I don't think I had seen that many before, held by one person.  As an adult the balloons make me feel melancholic.  I know my day is almost over and time to leave the Disney magic.  I will admit I get one once a year.

The Enchanted Tiki Room Revisited as an Adult

I do not have a visual memory of the Enchanted Tiki Room from my first visit to the Magic Kingdom in 1977.  I was only seven.  However the song, Tiki Tiki Tiki Room still gets caught in my head to this day.  On all other visits with my parents to WDW I never saw those singing birds.  My mom hated it and always made fun of it when we would walk by the pavilion.  Actually there is only one thing she likes in Adventureland, but that is for another day.  She would mock the show with a bad rendition of the song and laughingly say, "you don't want to go in there."  Secretly I did.  Fortunately I did get to visit in 1995 on my honeymoon, before it was refurbished.  I miss that version, but still enjoy this guilty pleasure.  The songs, the birds and the tikis all make me smile.  I think this is what started my love for all things tiki.

A little history of the Enchanted Tiki Room.  The original attraction opened in 1963 at Disneyland.  It was the first fully auto-animatronic show at Disney.  The concept was worked on personally by Walt Disney.  Upon returning from a trip to New Orleans with a little mechanical bird, Mr. Disney became determined to improve on the bird and to build a show around it.  After settling on a tropical island theme, the dining show was to be placed in Adventureland.  That is right, the Tiki Room was suppose to be a restaurant, with the animatronic birds performing while you dined.  A few weeks before opening the restaurant was turned into an attraction.  I could not find the reason for this change, if anyone knows please share.  The attraction was a success.

On October 1, 1971 the Enchanted Tiki Room - Tropical Serenade" opened at the Magic Kingdom Orlando.  The show was the same except for the opening.  The original version featured a waterfall that parted to introduce you to Clyde & Claude, a wonderful feathered pair.  The songs and dialogue were the same as the California version.  An almost forgotten fact about the WDW version is the orange bird.  The original sponsor for the attraction was the Florida Citrus Growers.  The pavilion that houses the birds was called the Sunshine Tree Pavilion. You would even be greeted by the mascot.

The show itself was a marvel of birds singing some great lyrics.  It really was impressive to see, knowing that this were not just puppets.  With waning crowds and what some thought to be a corny show the Tropical Sernade was closed in 1997 for renovation. It did reopen in 1998 with the addition of Zazu from the Lion King and Iago from Aladdin, as the new management.  These additions have not been well received.

I enjoy the new show, but long for the old.  There are lots of rumors of changes to come soon for the Tiki birds.  I hope it returns to the classic.
